Overview

Electrification of the Sunderbans islands in South Bengal by WBREDA has been incessantly revolutionizing the living standards of the people in the region. This solution has had a great impact on the local community in terms of more efficient illumination when compared to kerosene lanterns, increased employment, better trading opportunities and exposure to the outside world.

 

Process Deployed

The island village-Indrapur in Sunderbans can only be reached by a ninety-minute ferry ride. With grid power being practically impossible, the Standalone 110 kWp Solar Power Plant has been successfully designed, engineered, installed and commissioned in this area. The system comprises of a solar module with a capacity of 110 kWp. The inverter capacity is 30 kVA and it has a battery bank of 240V 1200Ah. These systems are designed to work for 2days (1 bright day and 1 cloudy day). The solar power generated, is utilized to provide power to every household for basic lighting, commercial utilization and for water pumping system against a small monthly payment.

 

Impact of Solution

The Solar Power Plant, in the fragile ecosystem of Sunderbans, enables 10,000 people in a fishing community to have access to electricity and clean water.
